My visit to Below & Above Truffles and Wine offered a genuine taste of the Pemberton region's potential through the lens of passionate owners, Kia and John Klepec. The temporary shed-turned-tasting-room where we sampled their Merlot, Pinot Noir, and Chardonnay was both unconventional and welcoming, reflecting the Klepecs' dedication to their craft. Each wine was not only delicious but also a clear indication of the meticulous care and thought invested in every bottle, from vine selection to sustainable practices.

As a extra special treat John guided us on a tour of the vineyard which revealed the depth of their commitment to regenerative agriculture, aiming to leave the land better than they found it. The decision to focus on specific Chardonnay and Pinot clones, along with Merlot, is ambitious and indicative of their quest to produce varietally correct, world-class wines. While Below & Above's approach is visionary, the experience felt personal and grounded, offering a unique insight into the future of winemaking in Pemberton, marked by both tradition and innovation.

We called in at 11.01am, so early that the sign was just being put out on the road.

There wines were on offer and we tasted them all. Particularly impressed with both the Chardonnay and the Pinot Noir.

It is difficult to find a decent Pinot in WA, however the 2015 release from Below & Above bucks the trend! Fruity cherry and plum flavours with a hint of oakiness, red liquorice, and star anise, it’s both youthful and somewhat elegant as an old world Pinot. Love it!
