πŸ“Œ Location of Kareeya Hydro Power Station

Kareeya Hydro Power Station Cardstone Road, Cardstone QLD 4854, Australia

Kareeya Hydro Power Station

nestles in the picturesque landscapes of Queensland, Australia, offering a fascinating glimpse into the world of renewable energy generation. Located at Address: Cardstone Road, Cardstone QLD 4854, Australia, this facility stands as a testament to the harnessing of natural resources for power generation. Its primary function is the operation of a hydroelectric power plant, making it a significant contributor to the local energy grid, albeit likely on a smaller scale compared to large national powerhouses.

Location and Environment

The station is situated in a region known for its natural beauty and potentially rugged terrain. Access to the plant itself is restricted, which is common for operational facilities. However, the surrounding area holds considerable appeal. As noted by visitors, the drive to Cardstone Road itself is a significant part of the experience, often described as a scenic journey. The location allows for a unique perspective on the integration of infrastructure with the natural environment, showcasing how energy production can coexist with, and sometimes alter, the landscape.

Facilities and Visitor Experience

While direct access to the operational parts of the power station might not be permitted, the surrounding grounds offer some engagement for the public. Observers often mention the ability to drive up to the site and view informational signs, providing context about its purpose and operation. A notable feature mentioned in visitor feedback is the staircase leading down to the riverbank at the start of the carpark. Although described as potentially 'bashed up', this pathway offers a tangible connection to the river and the hydroelectric process, allowing visitors a closer look at the water flow that powers the plant.

Specialties and Operations

At its core, Kareeya Hydro Power Station is dedicated to the production of hydroelectric power. This involves the controlled diversion of water, typically from a dam or river, to drive turbines connected to generators, thereby producing electricity. The station's specific design and scale would depend on the local topography and water resources available at its Cardstone Road location. Its operation adheres to the principles of hydroelectric power generation, converting the kinetic energy of falling or flowing water into electrical energy, a process known for its relative environmental cleanliness compared to fossil fuel-based generation.

Relevance for Visitors and Researchers

For individuals interested in renewable energy, engineering, or the history of regional power development in Queensland, Kareeya Hydro Power Station represents a point of interest. It provides a practical example of hydroelectric technology in action, albeit on a regional or local level. For tourists, it can be an intriguing stop on a route exploring the natural and industrial heritage of the area, particularly if combined with other local attractions like fishing spots mentioned in the reviews. Its remote location also adds to its mystique, making it a place for those seeking a different kind of experience away from major tourist hubs.

Visitor Feedback and Practical Advice

Visitor experiences are mixed, primarily due to the limited access. Some find the drive itself rewarding and appreciate the opportunity to view the structure and the river access point. The feedback mentioning the walk down the steps highlights a potential side activity for those willing to venture closer to the river edge, offering a more immersive, if unofficial, look. However, the comment about needing a specific purpose ('fishing & such on the drive back') suggests that the station itself might not be universally appealing. It serves more as a point of interest along the way rather than a major tourist destination with extensive facilities. Checking operational status and access permissions beforehand would be advisable for any visit.

Environmental and Economic Role

Operating a hydroelectric power plant like Kareeya contributes to the energy mix of the region, providing a renewable source of electricity. While the environmental impact is generally lower than fossil fuels, the construction and operation of hydroelectric facilities can have specific ecological consequences that would be considered in its full assessment. Economically, such plants support local infrastructure and can contribute to the regional energy supply stability. The station's role as a power plant is integral to the energy landscape it inhabits.

It’s a nice scenic drive up to here & not a lot to see right here other than the signs of information, so just depends on what your wanting or looking for as to if it’s worth the drive, but for me it was to say I’ve been to have a look, going to check out a few places for fishing & such on the drive back.

Despite the fact that you are couple of km from Koombooloomba Lake, there isn't any other access up than to drive back to Innisfail direction and go around 220 km over South Johnson to Ravenshoe (Palmerstone Hwy).
The old 'cattle' H Rd over Sutties Gap Rd (Misty Mountains) to Maalan does not work any more even for 4WD cars. It's blocked by rocks. The only way to go straight up is to persuade Kareeya Hydro to use their lift πŸ™‚
