I love Pears on Pottery. I’ve been 5 or 6 times now. I was looking for a new hobby and so – after having walked past the studio so many times I lost count – decided to give it a whirl. And I haven’t looked back. I’m a creative soul but never knew I was artistic!

Just goes to show you never know if you never try.
The studio is located in the heart of Mount Hawthorn on Coogee Street – just look for the cool, funky pottery pieces sitting on the windowsill. Personally, I really like the house with giant mushrooms towering behind it!

This time, I got in touch with my younger self and painted a stealth plane. Having grown up learning about the blackbird stealth plane (anyone born in the 80s will know what I mean😉) I had a lot of fun painting this piece. Although mine won’t be too stealthy, seeing as I included some light green and bright red on it! But that’s okay – creativity is all about doing what you want. I even did some etching today, which I hadn’t tried before. It’s really cool. You basically etch out some of your paint and re-paint it a different colour. I’m looking forward to seeing how it turns out.

Pottery painting is a great activity for kids and adults alike. It’s very mindful – you really get so absorbed in what you’re doing that you lose yourself in it. There’s a great selection of items to choose from too. From quokkas to mermaids to gnomes, cats and dogs, there’s something for everyone. I even painted a vampire once – it turned out quite ghoulish! There are also coffee cups for those who want something more practical to paint, not to mention Christmas ornaments and snowmen. Oh, and for those mystics out there, you can even paint a winged unicorn. I did this piece recently and went with a psychedelic motif. I was very happy with how it turned out and have included a photo of it (post firing) as part of this review.

The studio has daily paint sessions (that go for 2 hours) on Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays, as well as Saturdays and Sundays. There’s a few different time slots, so you should be able to work things into your schedule.

I’ve also done the ‘late night paint’ on Friday nights, which is super fun. It goes from 6 – 9 pm and you can bring your dinner. You have 3 hours to really focus on the piece you’re painting. It’s very social too. I’ve seen groups with cheeseboards that love to chat while they paint. It’s also a great way to wind down after the working week.

Everything you need to paint is provided, so all you need to do is turn up. The staff are super friendly and will tell you how to paint. It’s all good if it’s your first time, as the staff are really helpful and happy to answer questions anytime. And the pieces are well priced, starting at $15 and going up from there.

Once you’ve painted your piece, just leave it with the friendly staff and it’s off to the kiln for firing. Then you just wait for a text to let you know that your piece is ready. It’s always exciting to see how your pieces turn out.

So, if you’re looking for a cool way to spend some time, put Pears on Pottery on your list. It’s great fun!

I booked a table for my friends and we all had a great time, irrespective of our artistic abilities. The staff were very friendly and helpful with giving us tips and tricks. They have a great range of pottery to paint - from your standard mugs and bowls to coin boxes and fun little animals. Great atmosphere overall and would highly recommend!

Also I called in advance as one person wasn't able to make it and they provided a full refund for that person's booking - just make sure you do this 3 days in advance to your booking.
